Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Pie Crust
- Whisk the flour, salt and sugar together in a large bowl
- Add the cold cubes of butter
- Use a pastry cutter or fork to blend them into the flour until you are left with a mixture that resembles coarse crumbs
- Gradually add the iced water (1 tablespoon at a time) and keep mixing it with the other ingredients until the dough just about comes together
- Divide the dough into two equal portions
- Shape the divided dough into two discs, cover with a plastic cling wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour
Step 2: Make the Apple Filling
- Combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice and vanilla extract
- Toss all of the ingredients until the apples are evenly coated
- Allow the mixture to rest for 15 to 20 minutes, for the apples to release their juices
Step 3: Assemble the Pie
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C)
- Take out one of the chilled dough discs and roll it out on a lightly floured surface, just big enough to perfectly fit in a 9-inch pan
- Gently place the crust in the pie dish and trim the excess dough
- Add half of the apple filling and follow this by drizzling a few tablespoons of the caramel sauce for apple pie over it
- Create a second layer with the remaining apple filling and drizzle another tablespoon or two of the caramel sauce
- Follow this by gently placing the butter cubes evenly over the top
- Roll out the second dough disc and place it over the filling
- Seal and crimp the edges and cut a few slits on the top crust to allow the steam to escape
- Brush the top crust with an egg wash to achieve a golden finish
Step 4: Bake the Pie
- Bake the pie for 20 minutes at 400°F (200°C)
- After 20 minutes, reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 40 minutes, until the crust has turned golden and you can see the filling bubbling
- If you notice that the edges are browning quickly, cover it with an aluminum foil
- Once baked, leave the pie to cool for at least 2 hours to allow the filling to set completely
Pro Tips from DaVinci Gourmet
Tip 1: Use Cold Butter
If you wish to get a flaky and tender crust, using cold butter is preferred.
Tip 2: Combine Apple Varieties
To create a more balanced flavour, you should use a combination of tart and sweet apples.
Tip 3: Avoid Overfilling the Pie
Avoid using too much of the filling because doing so can make the crust soggy.
Tip 4: Warm & Don’t Boil
Never boil the DaVinci Gourmet Salted Caramel Sauce. Always warm it to get the perfect pourable texture.
Tip 5: Allow the Pie to Rest Before Serving
Allow the pie to cool and rest before serving it. Doing so will help the caramel sauce and juices to thicken, leaving you with neat slices.
